Willow Spiling
Willow takes are particularly suitable for planting on the riverbanks of fast flowing, spatey rivers.
Several species can be used depending on availability:
The best time of year to plant willows is between November and February.

In a flood when the willows are likely to be under water they will absorb some of the flood's energy without being damaged and they will also provide cover for fish which may otherwise be swept downstream.

Future management of these willows is beneficial to ensure continued bank protection. Regular coppicing promotes vigorous, healthy growth of both roots and shoots.
