Faggoting is another traditional technique used to prevent water erosion and to encourage accretion. Faggots have a number of applications in the re-establishment and repair of banks and to change the flow characteristics of waterways.

During Construction 

Three years later marginal aquatic plants have colonised. The velocity of the water has increased and gravel is now visible on the stream bed.

Faggots can also be laid horizontally against the bank and secured to stakes driven vertically into the ground.

Faggots can be laid in a line along the toe of a bank to provide scour protection, formed into a mattress as a foundation for a newly formed bank, and left uncovered to induce accretion.

Faggots are particularly effective in tidal estuaries, where the usually heavy silt load ensures rapid deposition.

Preplanted coir rolls can be placed on top of the faggots.
